Introduction

I'm a 37-year-old Aspie with some health problems (type 1 diabetes, asthma and depression). My endocrinologist recommended I do more walking because I want to lose some weight, or at least keep myself from gaining more weight. Extra weight can lead to insulin resistance in people with diabetes, and insulin resistance can cause even more weight gain, so it's a vicious circle.

I'm kind of spoiled in that my city has a very good bus service, and I'm more likely to take the bus somewhere than walk. But there is a very good walking trail that starts at the end of my street, and I'm trying to use it more often.

My supervisor at work gave us all step counters last fall, but I started using one that I got from a box of Special K! Unfortunately, it fell off somewhere along the trail and I never found it again. The one that my supervisor bought me came from Eddie Bauer, but it kept falling off too. So I ended up buying one from Wal-Mart that actually stays on!

My goal is 10,000 steps a day. I can usually make that if I walk to downtown and back, but I don't do that every day. I need to do that more often. When I start work again in September I'll start walking to work, which will help me get more steps in. Most days I don't even do 5,000.
